Facebook Unveils Graph Search: Better Internal Search System

All this while there was real curiosity in minds of all that “What Facebook is Working On ?” Well the answer is here now, Facebook today unveiled the Graph Search, or to simply put it, a better and smarter internal search system. Mark Zuckerberg today (15th January 2013) at the Facebook Headquarter at Palo Alto addressed and accustomed the media with new search matrix of facebook.

The graph search will enable the Facebook users to make specific search in the Facebook network. The intelligent search option by Facebook display the search results according to an users social activity. 

Now the question arises…What is this graph search anyways….???? Is it the same Web Search we do or something different ? Well the answer is Graph Search and Web Search are two different types of searches. Web search provides the best possible results from a keyword, for example “Mountain View” , whereas in Graph Search we add phrases to our search, example “which of my friends stays in Mountain View ?” , and then one gets the information regarding that. Another difference in Graph search is that every content has its specific audience and most of the content is not public in nature

With Graph Search you combine phrases (for example: ‘my friends in New York who like Jay-Z’) to get that set of people, places, photos or other content that’s been shared on Facebook.

We’ve built Graph Search from the start with privacy in mind, and it respects the privacy and audience of each piece of content on Facebook. It makes finding new things much easier, but you can only see what you could already view elsewhere on Facebook.

The graph search is still in very nascent stages and currently in English language only. The first version of Graph Search focuses on four main area i.e, people, places, photos, interests.

People: “friends who live in my city,” “people from my hometown who like hiking,” “friends of friends who have been to Yosemite National Park,” “software engineers who live in San Francisco and like skiing,” “people who like things I like,” “people who like tennis and live nearby”

Photos: “photos I like,” “photos of my family,” “photos of my friends before 1999,” “photos of my friends taken in New York,” “photos of the Eiffel Tower”

Places: “restaurants in San Francisco,” “cities visited by my family,” “Indian restaurants liked by my friends from India,” “tourist attractions in Italy visited by my friends,” “restaurants in New York liked by chefs,” “countries my friends have visited”

Interests: “music my friends like,” “movies liked by people who like movies I like,” “languages my friends speak,” “strategy games played by friends of my friends,” “movies liked by people who are film directors,” “books read by CEOs”
