Need Help Finding a Good Domain Name ?
Well , guys I had lots of struggling while searching for domain names, for my upcoming projects and so I think it would be better to write a blog post detailing how to find good domain names and also the various tools and softwares to help you find a good domain name .
First of all, I would like to outline briefly the key properties of a good domain name ,
- Keep it short (4-10 characters) is good but you may look for longer ones if you are unable to find suitable ones.
- Domain name should have one of your keywords ( like a wordpress theme website should have something like wptheme.com, themepress.com … ) , believe me it would help you to get high rankings in search engine results.
- Easy to remember – now this is really necessary , you cant expect a domain name like www.fxwnyted.com to be remebered by people, rather use rhyming words like, nicespice.com . crazydaisy.com , techspeck.com or similar ones .
- Prefer to buy a .com – Now this is what my experience with consistent SEO , google searching and my readings at various blogs say that you should go for a .com domain at the first instant as .com domain rank high in Google and other search engines .
- Avoid trying plurals/hyphens – It is not a good practice as it may give away your traffic to your competitor like you register techblogs.com or tech-blog.com when a domain techblog.com already exists then you are surely not creating a brand name and traffic diversion problems also exist .
Now, next part is about the tools and softwares that you can use to find good domain names that are available ,
- MakeWords.com is an excellent service that allows you to generate random domain names and also domains with specific keywords from various language dictionaries it supports, English,Hindi,Afrikaans and many more .
- ajaxlookup.com,instantdomainsearch.com and ajaxwhois.com are service based on AJAX that let you see availability of domain name as you are typing, so they basically increase your efficiency .
- There are some shareware software’s available that also aid you in domain search , just Google them you’ll find plenty but believe me they are of no good as they have several limitations to force you into buying it !
- http://thesaurus.reference.com is a very nice resource for finding synonyms , so that you can register a similar meaning domain , when the first one is not available .
and Now some tips on How to Tackle the biggest problem , ie. No available domains for what you are searching .
It happens with every one of us, who sets out thinking he will get a pretty domain for his blog/ website but gets to know that domain is not available, the rich ones just go and buy them from their owners ( directly or through intermediary like sedo.com etc. )
Now , for the remaining ones like me who do not want to invest extra here are some tips to get cool sounding domain names that are available and also unique(ie. no plurals )
- Try domain name in your native language, like if I wanted to make a funny blog , being an Indian I would have looked for something like masti.com , mazaa.com etc . this increases your chance of getting a available domain .
- Mix two words to make a new one, like linspire.com a mix of Linux and Inspire
- Eat up some silent letters like if morningtea.com is not available, I would look for morningt.com and similarly for cybernews.com I would have looked for cibernews.com ( it’s a personal preference but I would recommend this technique, as it gives you a cool name and people tend to remember it, Just because it’s differently written )
- Well, that was all from my side , see you guys soon with a Shiny new Domain , and do leave your comments as they help others to learn more about the topic which I may have missed ( To err is human,to comment and correct is divine )
does this strategy work?
