Terrorist Group Al Qaeda Joins Twitter
Micro Blogging and Social Media is surely catching up. Even terrorist organizations have realized the importance of having a social media profile. It is reported that Al Qaeda’s closely linked terrorist group Al-Shabaab which runs Mujahideen Youth Movement in Somalia has joined the 140 wonder character micro blogging site twitter. Al-Shabaab’s twitter account is named as @HSMPress (Harakat Al-Shabaab Al Mujahideen Press Office).
The group HSMPress was first spotted on twitter on 16th September 2011 but the first tweet from the terrorist organization came on 7th December 2011. The tweet was in Arabic
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم which means “In the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful.”
The group HSMPress currently is not following anyone but has 2,167 followers. It is cited that Al-Shabaab’s main aim is to gain control over Somalia and plans impose its own Sharia Law. Al Shabaab has reportedly taken initiative to join twitter in response to counter Keneyan military’s spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir, who uses his Twitter to highlight the government’s success in combating the al-Shabaab. In one of the tweet’s criticizing Keneya’s war against Somalia; the Tweet read as
“An army without experience, clear strategy & objective is fragile to winds of resistance & slightest confrontation precipitates defeat,”
Well lets see that that to what extent Al Shabaab is successful in gaining interest of Somalian people, as the country do not have much of internet savvy people.
